The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest bicycle tunnel, has been constructed as a part of a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza.  נווה פריצקי The tunnel's southern entrance is located within Refaim Park below Ein Laban. While the northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem about half an hour away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened in a ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was a popular tourist destination because of its glorious historical. Elkin stated that the current tourist industry is a part of Jerusalem's historic treasures and is also a part of modern-day tourism. "The inauguration (of [this] tunnel project is a further step in the development of Jerusalem and it's transformation into a sought-after tourist destination for all kinds of visitors in Israel as well as across the world."



Elkin his ministry, which spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested thousands of shekels each year in the city's tourism development and in the development of new ventures and attractions which will link the amazing historical past with the exciting future of Jerusalem. I invite the cycling community to enjoy a safe and modernized route that will take you through Old Jerusalem.

נווה פריצקי The project was funded by the Elkin's Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the goal to change the way of thinking and transport in Jerusalem.  נווה פריצקי "The tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths within the city as well as those that are being constructed in its different neighborhoods. It's designed to encourage bicycle riding within its inhabitants, and to promote the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek.  נווה פריצקי It is currently being utilized as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

In order to make the tunnel accessible to the public year-round The works comprise road construction as well as the installing blowers.

The Kerem Tunnel gives you access to many recreational sites, such as Ein Kerem Neighborhood, the Biblical Zoo and Aquarium and also historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh or Ein Laban.
