The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel is now open as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, Israel's capital city.
נווה פריצקי The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. נווה פריצקי The tunnel's southern entrance is below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially opened by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister ZeevElkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company Chairman, as well as thousands of cyclists.
Jerusalem was once sought-after tourist destination due to its historical past. Today, apart from its historical treasures it also has modern-day tourism," Elkin said. "The opening of this tunnel project is a different element of the development of Jerusalem. The tunnel transforms the city into an attractive tourist destination for every kind of person within Israel as well as around the world."
Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year to develop the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of exciting tourist attractions and ventures that link the rich history of our capital city's eternal past to the future of Jerusalem... I encourage the cycling community to ride a secure and modernized route that will take the cyclist through Old Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewer from Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is still used as an infrastructure tunnel.

To make the tunnel accessible to the public all year round, the works include road construction as well as the installation of blowers.
