In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that runs around the capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The opening ceremony of the tunnel, which is 2.1 kilometers long took place in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion and Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) along with hundreds of cyclists.

The city's rich history was a reason for it to be a popular tourist destination in the past. Elkin stated that, today aside from its rich history, Jerusalem is also a destination for modern-day tourists. "The inauguration [of] this tunnel project is yet another milestone in the advancement of Jerusalem as an ideal tourist destination for all kinds of people from Israel and around the globe."

Around NIS 25 million were put into in the project, financed by the Elkin's Ministry The Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the dream of altering the way of transportation throughout Jerusalem. "The tunnel, which connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect with existing cycle paths within the city as well as the ones that will be constructed within the diverse neighborhoods. It is designed to encourage cycling among its residents, and to promote an environmentally sustainable transportation system in Jerusalem."


The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move the main sewer line toward Sorek's purification plant.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers and advanced security and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for pedestrians to travel through throughout the year.
